Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of product should I use?

There are lots of great products out there, and it is totally normal to go through a few before you find the one that works best for you. Many oils and balms come in a variety of pleasant scents, so take note of your favorite scents before you shop. For example, if you hate the smell of Lavender, make sure not to buy an oil that has Lavender. On the same train of thought, just because you like the smell of Almond Oil does not mean that you will like every oil out there with Almond Oil. Every brand has their own take on the classics. Or, you could always make your own!

My boss told me I have to shave. Is this true?

Depending on your job, this may be a safety or health issue. Usually there is a way that you can keep your facial hair at work, most of the time by containing it in a hairnet or twisting it into a tight bun underneath your chin (if it is long enough). If your boss is just being a jerk, maybe you should consider another place of employment, or start your own business.

if I grow my moustache longer will I have to change my diet?

Short answer is: No. If you try, you can learn how to eat the heartiest of soups, the spiciest or wings, and the runniest of eggs while wearing extremely long facial hair. However, we do suggest to keep a napkin handy. Here are some people trying their best to eat some messy food while bearded.

Which style of facial hair is best for me?

If you don’t already know, then our top suggestion is to grow your beard for ONE YEAR without shaving. You can trim for comfort while eating or kissing, but try to do that minimally if possible. If you grow out your facial hair for a FULL YEAR, you will see what you have to work with, and from there you can make a more informed choice. You’d be surprised how many people who once thought they had a “patchy” beard grew it out for a year and saw the patchiness disappear.

If you are too impatient to grow out your beard for a FULL YEAR (which everyone should do at least once in their lives), you can always print out some pictures of yourself and draw on different facial hair until you find on that you want to try to grow.
Pro Tip: Don’t give up!

Can I use normal shampoo on my beard?

Yes, you can. Most people are able to regulate their own hygiene regiment, so you do you! But, there are several products out there that are especially made for the skin on your face, and if you are someone with sensitive skin or just want to be sure, maybe you should try a beard shampoo at least once.

How can I find a Facial hair club in my area?

Great question! I would suggest doing an internet search for “beard club” followed by your cities name. If nothing comes up, try inserting your state name instead of the city name. If you can’t find anything that suits you, you can simply start your own! A Facial Hair Club is basically a social club. Most have a common goal, like to raise money for a certain charity, or to participate in certain events to represent their city or state. If you take your club far enough, someday you might qualify to be admitted into the World Beard and Moustache Association .

Why will my beard only grow this long (makes gesture of beard length)?

Many wearers of facial hair experience the phenomenon known as terminal length. This is as long as your beard will grow under most conditions. Scalp hair often also has a terminal length. Many factors are involved in terminal length, and one of the biggest is genetics. However, if you are willing to put in the work, we have seen several folks with a shorter terminal length wear a much longer beard after dedicated self care, beard care, and some even by locking it.
From the Beardsgaard Barbers site, “While there are plenty of products out there that promise you the beard of your dreams, there is no quick fix. Keeping it occasionally trimmed, well-moisturized and well-cared for won’t necessarily help it grow more, but it can definitely help prevent length lost to damage. The best trick is one no one likes to hear: be healthier. Hair, skin and nail condition are all drastically affected by overall health. So drink your water, eat your dark leafy greens, drink less alcohol, stop smoking, work out…you know, all those things you were planning on doing anyway, right? But if those don’t sound like things that are going to happen, just keep your face creature well-tended, bring your patience shoes, and have a good time on the journey.”

What is a Beard Competition?.

Beard Competitions are facial hair events where you are guaranteed to see men hugging, big smiles, and people having fun. These occasions almost always have a charitable aspect and welcome newcomers with open arms. Those who are new to the experience of competing are often blown away by the amount of fun they had.

Are there official rules?

While some Nationals and International competitions have strict regulations, most local, smaller beard competitions are more loose. Some may only have 4 divisions, some might have 14 (or more). You can check out the parameters for the US National Beard and Moustache Championships here.

Do I need to be affiliated with a team or product in order to qualify to compete?

No. No endorsements or experience necessary.

How can I join Beard Team USA?

Beard Team USA is open to everyone. If you have facial hair and want to represent the United States of America, you are welcome to claim membership in Beard Team USA. For the time being, there are no applications, dues, or other membership requirements. We are working on some more official membership opportunities that will be available at a later date.

My beard is lame. What can I do?

Own it! Your beard is beautiful, just like you. Every person has a unique style all their own, and your facial hair can help complete your personal look. You don’t need to compare your beard to other beards. Even in the competitions, it is all about how you represent yourself as a person with the addition of facial hair. Be confident, be yourself, and have fun!
